The weather may not reflect it, but it’s almost time for winter sports to begin! Last night Hillcrest hosted Meet the Cougars in the high school gym and previewed our basketball and soccer athletes.
Basketball season begins Tuesday, November 1 for both the JV and Varsity girls’ teams, who will play in a pre-season tournament at MRA beginning at 5:15 PM and 6:30 PM, respectively. The boys’ teams will play their first games at home versus West Memphis on Saturday, November 5; games will begin at 1:00 PM that day with the JV girls’ team.
Soccer season begins the following week on Monday, November 7, at Porter’s Chapel beginning at 5:30 PM. The soccer team’s first home game will take place on Thursday, November 17, versus Copiah; kickoff is at 4:30 PM that day.
Schedules for all teams (5th & 6th, 7th & 8th, Junior Varsity, and Varsity) can be found by clicking on the “ATHLETICS” tab above. Please make plans to support all of our hard-working Cougar athletes!
The Cougar football team will play their final game of the 2016 season tonight at Parklane Academy in McComb. It will be a bittersweet night for our senior team members and their families, and as always, these young men have pushed themselves to perform better each and every week for the past several months.
Similarly, tonight marks the last time our senior band members will perform during halftime, and their show “Light” — a moving interpretation of God’s creation of the world — received numerous awards at three different competitions this season.
Hillcrest family, please come out to Parklane beginning at 7:00 tonight to show your support one more time for all of these hard-working athletes!
Girls’ volleyball is the most recent addition to the HCS athletics program; our first team was formed in 2012. In just a few short years at Hillcrest, this sport has become extremely popular among our students, with nearly 40 girls in grades 6 through 12 now participating.
Next week — Monday and Tuesday — all Cougar Volleyball teams will play their last 2 matches for the season. Both games are away, at MRA and at Prep, respectively. This would be a great time to go support our athletes, especially if you haven’t seen them in action yet, and cheer them on to a Win!
Rumor had it that these girls weren’t going to win a single game this season, but the negative people who made this prediction must have forgotten to tell the 2016 Lady Cougars softball team. They may be a young group, still figuring out all the “ins and outs” of working together, but these young ladies appear to be fast learners, and they play to win. This was most evident in their tournament this past weekend; the Lady Cougars went 2 – 0 with wins over Newton and Central Hinds.
Their next home game is Monday versus Copiah; both the junior varsity and varsity teams will play.
An old Spanish proverb states, “A full stomach makes a happy heart.” Cougar fans and supporters definitely want to keep our hard-working athletes happy, so the peewee football team and cheerleaders enjoyed a breakfast in their honor before their first game on Tuesday, August 30th.
