…Basketball goals, that is. Congratulations to our JV teams — girls and boys — for their victories at the district tournament held at Parklane yesterday. The boys’ team took 1st place for the second year in a row, and the JV girls came in 2nd overall in the district. Way to go, Cougars!!!
We also want to congratulate our senior basketball players for their successes this season and every other season which they’ve played as Cougars throughout the years. Thank you for all your hard work and for your neverending Cougar spirit!
Congratulations to senior Mayowa “Mario” Asagunla who participated in National Signing Day, one of the most celebrated days each year for college football fans. Mario signed his letter of intent, committing to East Central Community College in Decatur, Mississippi, and he will play football for the Warriors.
As part of their efforts to “make the student section great again,” a group of young men — collectively known as the the HCS Hype Squad — have created themes for each varsity basketball game played at home this season. Along with the night’s theme, they have also written skits which they perform at halftime during the Varsity Boys’ games.
At the last home game, for instance, while “The Andy Griffith Show” theme song played, the Hype Squad paddled a raft out to the middle of the gym floor to catch “the big one.” Unfortunately, the big one pulled back!
If you haven’t seen these guys in action, you still have a couple of chances. The next home game is Tuesday, beginning at 4:00 PM with the Junior Varsity girls. After that, there will only be one more regular home game — senior night — on Tuesday, February 7th. Make sure to come out and catch the games AND the halftime shows!
There is a great deal of excitement — and soon enough, arrows — in the air, as approximately 50 students (pictured here) are “taking aim” to be part of a new spring sport: archery. Band director Josh Landrum, who is also an accomplished archer and has placed in numerous competitions, will be the team’s coach. Most of the necessary equipment has been already delivered, so parents, if your child is pictured here, be on the lookout for more information very soon.
While school took a break for the past 2 weeks, winter sports did not. Both basketball and soccer are mid-season and still have several games left, and our Cougar athletes have been working hard and will continue to push themselves in order to have successful seasons.
Please continue to come out and support our Cougar basketball and soccer teams. Junior varsity and varsity basketball will next play this Saturday at Jackson Academy beginning at 2:00 PM. The Cougar soccer team will play again Tuesday, January 10 at Oak Forest beginning at 5:00 PM.
