Boosting the Band

Support the band and save yourself some time; order a smoked pork butt roast. Better yet, order two! These are great for Easter, and you won’t have to worry about preparing a giant ham to feed the family! Even if you don’t plan to use it for Easter, don’t let that stop you; these pork butts are great for freezing and eating later too.

Orders must be placed by Monday, April 3rd, and the pick-up date for the roasts is Good Friday, April 14th.  Each one weighs between 7 and 8 pounds (pre-cooked), and they are smoked and ready-to-eat. The cost is $35 per roast.  Click here to print out the form, and return it with your payment to Rita Wright in the high school office.

Also, the Uniform Resale Store will have a spring sale on Monday, March 6th from 3:00 – 6:00 PM.  This is yet another way not only to take care of your family’s needs, but also to support the band so that they may continue to be award-winning representatives of Hillcrest.

Halftime Shows

As part of their efforts to “make the student section great again,” a group of young men — collectively known as the the HCS Hype Squad — have created themes for each varsity basketball game played at home this season.  Along with the night’s theme, they have also written skits which they perform at halftime during the Varsity Boys’ games.

At the last home game, for instance, while “The Andy Griffith Show” theme song played, the Hype Squad paddled a raft out to the middle of the gym floor to catch “the big one.”  Unfortunately, the big one pulled back!

If you haven’t seen these guys in action, you still have a couple of chances.  The next home game is Tuesday, beginning at 4:00 PM with the Junior Varsity girls. After that, there will only be one more regular home game — senior night — on Tuesday, February 7th.  Make sure to come out and catch the games AND the halftime shows!

Loose Ends

It’s hard to believe that we’re already thirteen weeks into the school year, and the time is showing no sign of slowing down as we count down the remaining days until the end of 2016.  As always, our students are staying plenty busy with studies, sports, clubs and activities, and friends.  As a result, there are a few “loose ends”  — a variety of news tidbits — to share with the HCS family.  Here goes…

Last week, the 4th grade classes held and participated in their annual Hoedown, a long-standing Hillcrest tradition and a fun time to show parents and friends how all their hard work has paid off.

In other (good!) news, Christmas break has been extended by one day.  Originally, students, faculty and staff were scheduled to return from Christmas break on Monday, January 2nd; however, since that day is the federally recognized holiday for New Year’s, we will start back to school on Tuesday, January 3rd. No further changes to the academic schedule will be required to make up for this extra holiday, so mark your calendars and make your plans.

Next, the Cougar baseball team needs your help!  We’re looking for Cougar Supporters to buy field banners which will help provide our young athletes with essential, quality equipment such as baseballs, new bases, deck mats, screens, mound clay, and other items and expenditures necessary to prepare for a successful 2017 season.  Not only is this a great way to support our baseball team, it is also excellent advertisement for businesses.  If interested, please click on the link provided under the ATHLETICS tab and the Baseball heading, or call Athletic Director Todd Montgomery.

Finally, don’t forget that the uniform resale store will be open this Thursday, and now would be a great time to stock up on your students’ uniform needs for the cooler weather… should it decide to show up, that is!  Also, if you need to turn any outgrown items in for resale, please click on the link found under the UNIFORMS tab, and fill out the required form ahead of time.

Homecoming Wrap-Up and What’s Next

We came, we saw, we conquered… Homecoming week!  Congratulations to the Cougar varsity football team for an exciting win over Amite Friday night.  Our boys fought hard and came out with the victory, which they then celebrated at the Homecoming dance.  Prior to that, it was a week filled with games, costumes, and a parade, which allowed upper-school classes to compete for points and yet-to-be-determined prizes.  The seniors earned the most points in the high school, and the 8th grade took the win in the junior high.  Congratulations to both classes!

Congratulations also must go to Madelyn Banks, who was elected 2016 Homecoming Queen.  She and all the other maids not only looked beautiful Friday night, but they represented Hillcrest well.

School has now returned somewhat back to normal; however, the upper school will be taking 9 Weeks’ Exams this week, and we will be on regular schedule each day.  Today, due to an early-morning power outage, students will only take their second period exams; the first period exam has been moved to Thursday.  Tuesday’s exams are third and fourth periods; Wednesday’s exams are fifth and sixth periods; and Thursday’s exams are first and seventh periods, as well as any make-ups students may have.  After that, school will be closed for a well-deserved four-day weekend for Fall Break!
