Are You Ready for Some Football?!

Tonight is the Cougars’ first football game of the 2016 season, and our boys are ready to “Begin with a Win” at home against the Clinton Christian Academy Warriors.

Our Senior players, especially, are ready to show that they mean business in their last first game. Quarterback Mario Asagunla says his goal for tonight is to “get the ball to the end of the field, every time I get my hands on it.”  Defensive Tackle Connor McDavid is optimistic not only that the Cougars will get the win, but that “we’ll be up 27 to nothing at the half.”

With these ten young men leading the team, the Cougars are sure to have a successful football season.

Student Spotlight – Madelyn Banks

Madelyn Banks is a senior who has been attending Hillcrest since fifth grade; she is a member of Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta, as well as captain of the color guard.  Outside of school, Madelyn is active in her church youth group at First Baptist – Terry, where she enjoys participating in the prayer partners program.  This past summer, she attended Camp Generate in Daytona, Florida, where she not only worshiped but also served at the local Boys and Girls Club.  Madelyn enjoyed acting in a play as part of her service and says that since then she has felt God leading her to speak, to share her testimony and to tell others how the Lord is working in her life.  Her fear of public speaking has overwhelmed Madelyn in the past, but she is determined to be obedient and to overcome her anxiety.

Madelyn feels certain that HCS is exactly where she is supposed to be, and she believes that God has great things in store for our school.  She is inspired by the song “I Am Yours” by Lauren Daigle, which proclaims, “It’s all in Your hands / I see the evidence / Leaving nothing to chance / The world’s in Your hands.” Her personal goal for the year is to leave her mark on the school, and she knows that the best way to do that is to help every student find his or her meaning in Christ.  For her fellow members of the Class of 2017, she trusts that they will continue to grow in their friendship, which has felt more like a family, throughout the year and even after graduation she hopes they won’t drift apart.

After high school, Madelyn plans to attend Hinds Community College before transferring (most likely) to the University of Mississippi.  Though she has not specifically chosen a major, she knows that she wants to work in the field of medicine.

Where Are They Now? – Scott Pope

Scott Pope, a Cougar beginning in K4, graduated from Hillcrest in 2012.  While at HCS, Scott participated in band and was chosen to receive the Director’s Award his senior year; he also was an avid soccer player and ran track throughout high school.

After graduation, Scott attended Mississippi State University, where earlier this year, he completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology, graduating with Cum Laude honors.pope1

Scott’s hard work at MSU has led to his receiving numerous awards and recognition, including the Undergraduate Research Award for the College of Education in 2015 and Personal Trainer of the Year at the Joe Frank Sanderson Center.  He has now been accepted into graduate school at MSU and is working toward his degree as a Master of Science in Exercise Physiology.  He is also getting ready to take the Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist examination later this month.

In his free time Pope enjoys competitive powerlifting in the American Powerlifting Association, and he is engaged to Bethany Lossau; their wedding date is set for May 20, 2017.

Scott says that he is always thankful for the education that he received at Hillcrest Christian School because his time here prepared him not only for studying both as an undergraduate and now as a graduate student, but also helped tremendously in making life’s biggest decisions.

Setting the Stage for Excellence

It didn’t take long for Hillcrest students to get back “into the groove” of the regular school routine.  After one week, notes have been taken, homework has been completed, and a few tests and quizzes have even been passed!  The stage has been set for our scholars to achieve excellence this year.
